Getting a publisher is not just about finding someone willing to fund or market your game. Your project, team, production plan, and expectations all play a role in whether a publishing partnership can actually work.
In this episode, we explore what publishers are really evaluating when they consider a game, what makes a studio ready to work with, the different ways developers and publishers can structure a partnership, and the production challenges that can shape a game’s path to release
Q?Box Round Answers
Name one thing that motivates you every day?
Helping people meet their goals. I really enjoy working with teams who have a big goal and doing what I can to help them. This includes my family, friends, and co-workers.
Biggest gaming pet peeve?
Tutorials that have boxes popping up every few seconds. I just want to get into the game and start playing. I can figure things out with less guidance.
What game are you playing now?
Pokemon Go is my go to. Just finished playing RE requieum.
TIPS and ADVICE
We covered quite a bit today. Could you list 3 suggestions or tips you would recommend to indie devs based on our discussion?
- Understand who your audience is and how your game serves that audience
- Be thoughtful and realistic about the scope of your game and what you can actually accomplish together as s team
- It’s better to ship a first game that isn’t your best idea/most important idea first, so you can learn the ropes of all the things that go into launching a game.
