Episode Name:
How the Indie Marketing Playbook Is Broken
Episode Description:
Indie game marketing advice spreads fast but much of it is rooted in conditions that have quietly changed, and in some cases, no longer apply. The problem? Most developers haven’t noticed yet.
In this episode, we break down why the strategies studios have relied on are losing effectiveness, what’s driving that shift, and what a smarter, more adaptive approach looks like for reaching players in today’s market.
Q?Box Round Answers
What’s the most helpful or impactful advice you ever received?
Divorce Your Ego. I heard this from a writing professor during a workshop and it’s all about how you need to separate yourself from your work, which is a very painful thing to do, in order to properly take feedback.
Biggest gaming pet peeve?
“Game Balance.” As a concept. Balance is kind of an impossible thing to achieve and lots of players approach it totally incorrectly.
What game are you playing now?
I just beat Vampire Crawlers!
TIPS and ADVICE
We covered quite a bit today. Could you list 3 suggestions or tips you would recommend to indie devs based on our discussion?
- Use probabilistic thinking and lay your foundation
- Think about wishlists in a more complex way
- Create a “crucible” of advocates
