Episode Name:
Rethinking How Great Game Design Happens
Episode Description:
Great game design doesn’t just come from talent or vision. It can fall apart when good ideas get stuck, overlooked, or brought in too late.
So today, we’re going to explore how studios can adapt lessons from large teams to improve design input, make better informed decisions, and turn collaboration into better gameplay.
Q?Box Round Answers
What’s the most common mistake you see devs or studios make with their games?
Playtest too late
Why do you make games?
Because of self-actualization (see Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs). When I graduated and chose games over film, I told my dad it was the right time to make an impact in the medium.
What game are you playing now?
Subways Surfers City & A Slight Chance of Sawblades – for mobile metagame research
also Beat Saber twice a week for exercise
TIPS and ADVICE
We covered quite a bit today. Could you list 3 suggestions or tips you would recommend to indie devs based on our discussion?
- Tip 1. playtest early to simplify your design & work efficiently
- Tip 2. get buy-in from your team/early players by including them in design process
- Tip 3. diligence matters – proper preparation prevents piss poor performance!
