Episode Name:
Rethinking How Indie Games Get Funded
Episode Description:
Building an indie game takes more than funding alone. It also takes support, resources, and a path to market. But too often, those pieces get tied to a single assumption: finding a publisher.
So in this episode, we unpack that mindset and explore how developers can think more strategically about funding, partnerships, and building a more sustainable path forward that’s grounded in action and not assumption.
Q?Box Round Answers
What’s the most common mistake you see companies make in the industry with their businesses?
Lack of preparation. People tend to go as fast as possible but often don’t take enought time to think through and iterate. On my side, it took me more than 7 years to create Not A Shark Company. We had a general idea, and a name but I had to go through multiple professional and personal experience to find the right recipe and see the stars align.
What’s the most helpful or impactful advice you ever received?
To Listen to my gut feelings. I have spent many years trying to rationalize everything and I was often overthinking and misjudging things. I now use my brain to compute probabilities of success but I listen to my guts down the line. If I see the odds are roughly in favor of my instinct, then I go!
What game are you playing now?
I am playing a lot of games^^ Resident Evil Requiem, but I have to play during the day. It is goo exhausting mentality during the night. I just finished 100% Hades 2 and Absolum recently. Else, I play Drop Dutchy with my son. And yeah still playing Binding of Isaac religiously…

TIPS and ADVICE
We covered quite a bit today. Could you list 3 suggestions or tips you would recommend to indie devs based on our discussion?
- Take your time! Prepare, research, analyse. Start with a market study before developing anything
- Don’t scale too fast. Keep a small team and limit your overheads and structure cost as much as possible.
- Always plan a budget for publishing your game. You will need at least 30% to 100% of your production costs!
