Episode Name:
The Studio Culture You Never Meant to Build
Episode Description:
Studio culture isn’t something you have, it’s something you’re constantly creating, whether you realize it or not. And for most indie teams, that’s exactly the problem. The culture taking shape inside your studio may not be the one you intended, and by the time you notice, the damage may already be done.
So today, we examine what unintentional culture actually looks like, how to spot it before it holds your team back, and what it takes to build an environment where both your people and games can thrive.
Q?Box Round Answers
What’s the most common mistake you see devs or studios make with their games?
Thinking culture will take care of itself 🙂 Not editing games early enough and rigorously prioritizing features with the biggest impact
Name one thing that motivates you every day?
Seeing transformation in people and studios, the AHA moments, helping people live happier more fulfilled lives
What game are you playing now?
Completely addicted to Pokopia
TIPS and ADVICE
We covered quite a bit today. Could you list 3 suggestions or tips you would recommend to indie devs based on our discussion?
- Read any of Jim Collins books – not specific to games but very relevant for innovative companies (good to great, great by choice, built to last, BE 2.0)
- Get yourself a coach
- Don’t let culture be an afterthought, audit regularly, test it – and when problems in development arise ask yourself “is this a culture problem”
