How Indie Devs Can Think Big
Episode Description:
Many indie game developers fall into the trap of letting their limitations dictate their creative process, which can affect more than just their games.
So today, we’re going to challenge this mindset by discussing how studios can apply AAA principles to their projects, and learn how to think big, innovate, and overcome limitations that may stand in the way.
Q?Box Round Answers
What’s the most common mistake you see devs or studios make with their games?
For AAA, Games budgets are growing too large. Having to resort to live service models which are not a sustainable model for wide spread use in the industry. Overscoping is an issue that plagues indie devs and AAA devs.
Most influential/inspiring Game?
Anything Nintendo. Notably Zelda and Metroid games.
What game are you playing now?
World of Warcraft War Within
TIPS and ADVICE
We covered quite a bit today. Could you list 3 suggestions or tips you would recommend to indie devs based on our discussion?
- Identify the core game pillars of your games design. Think about how each mechanic, UI, feature supports your pillars. It will make the game feel more cohesive.
- Share your work. Online and in person. No one is going to just stumble on you and your game. You need to build your own platform and consistantly share your work. Be proud of what you achieved.
- Take a break. Games are hard to make. Ensure you are setting yourself time to socialise with friends and be with loved ones. More often than not, that elusive bug is resolved immediately after stepping away for a day.
