Episode Name:
Making Sense of Game Marketing Attribution
Episode Description:
Attribution often feels like a black box for indie devs, but ignoring it can cost you time, money, and momentum.
In this episode, we break down what attribution really is, why it matters, and how small teams can start tracking what counts while learning how to avoid misleading metrics, balance data with creative instincts, and make smarter marketing decisions that actually move the needle.
Q?Box Round Answers
What advice would you give to someone else that’s just starting out?
Believe in your vision, but make sure you have a solid understanding of the market, audience and strategy from the beginning – this is not a hobby but a business, so to become successful you need to be aware of that at all times. Marketing starts at the beginning, not only when you want to sell your game.
Biggest gaming pet peeve?
In games marketing: Be aware what different strategies and objectives mean, how the complement each other and what the right marketing approaches are. For example, wishlists are not a strategy, they are a metric.
What game are you playing now?
Just started to play Blue Prince, and just played Switch 2 at the German experience event, so super hyped for it.
TIPS and ADVICE
We covered quite a bit today. Could you list 3 suggestions or tips you would recommend to indie devs based on our discussion?
- Understand that marketing is part of creating a game, since marketing tells you all you need to know about your audience and potential.
- Build a strong understanding of data and what it means from the beginning and make your decisions based on that.
- Stay flexible, be creative, be yourself, don’t just copy what others are doing and become unrecognisable in the process.
